Ski The Snowy Colorado Mountains

skiing in Colorado

There’s something magical about visiting a snow-covered mountain top surrounded by nature, and the exhilaration of skiing down a slope is almost mystical.

Perhaps it is the adrenaline, but ski resorts have been a hot travel destination for years and seem to be increasing more over time as more people take their families on these trips.

A few of the best areas for a ski adventure are in Colorado.

Aspen

Aspen, situated in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains and elevated over 8,000 feet, is one of the most popular skiing destinations in the United States and in the world – whether you’re a seasoned or first-time skier. I like to describe Aspen as the ‘beautiful postcard winter-wonderland mountain getaway’.

So, what makes Aspen so special? Aspen offers world-class skiing and snowboarding adventures, along with many outdoor recreation activities such as ice skating, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

Aspen is the perfect destination for a winter family vacation – for both children and adults! Families can take excursions to the top of the 11,212-foot-high Aspen Mountain Gondola and partake in skiing adventures with access to over 75 trails.

A few other activities for your family to engage in during your visit to Aspen include attending Aspen X Games winter action sports; visiting the breathtaking scenery of Maroon Bells; or immersing yourself in Aspen’s arts and culture by visiting the Aspen Art Museum, or the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet center.

Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs, located in the upper valley of the Yampa River in Colorado, is a popular ski destination renowned for some of the most extraordinary hot springs in Colorado. This remote and spacious destination has a vast array of resorts nestled in the mountains, perfect for a peaceful nature retreat.

Strawberry Park Hot Springs, a popular off-the-grid all-natural hot spring located approximately seven miles north of Steamboat Springs, should undoubtedly be on your itinerary when visiting. With over 20 hot springs, soak up and relax in the all-natural 104 degrees (Fahrenheit) mineral pools with the beauty of nature surrounding you.

A perfect destination for families, Steamboat Spring offers a memorable vacation experience. You can ski on the Steamboat Ski Area or Howelsen Hill; embark on an ‘Ice and Fly’ adventure (fishing in the frozen lakes); bike up the snowy hills; or (for adults) take a trip on the Steamboat Brew Trail, where you can discover multiple breweries and a distillery, and sample some of the best beers in the state.

Winter Park

Winter Park

Winter Park, located in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, is a unique location because it is home to one of Colorado’s oldest operating ski resorts, Winter Park Resort, which is still in operation today.

I adore Winter Park with its breathtaking scenery of the town covered in a blanket of white snow, as well as the variety of outdoor activities and winter sports available. This is a family-friendly ski destination and the perfect location for first-time skiers.

Winter Park, in my opinion, is considered the friendliest ski resort destination for beginners due to the number of easy slopes available to ski, from Winter Park Mountain to Mary Jane to Vasquez Ridge.

These are manageable slopes and are specifically marketed towards beginner skiers, offering practice lifts close to the base and ski schools on-site at the Winter Park Resort.

With over 3000 acres of terrain to explore, you can find many fun things to do including visiting Winter Park Resort; tubing at the Coca Cola Tubing Hill; riding the Winter Park Alpine Slide; taking a snowcat tour; or participating in one of the many sunset tours available, all of which offer breathtaking views.

You can’t go wrong with a visit to Winterpark!
